Case Study - Three Vehicle Pileup

We received a phone call from a young businessman from Brighton, East Sussex who had been involved in a vehicle accident while on his way to work. He took the route through town as he needed to pick up a parcel from the post office for his boss.

He approached the post office travelling at just 30 mph, the speed limit for this zone which is close to a school, and signalled to park outside the entrance. Just as he was about to pull into a parking space his car was hit from behind with a sudden and forceful shunt.

It appears that the three-vehicle accident was a result of a van driver not seeing the car in front of it slow to allow the young man to park outside the post office. This caused the van to smash into the back of a Vauxhall Corsa which then ploughed straight into the back of our client's Ford Focus.

This left the man with a fairly severe whiplash injury as his neck was twisted round awkwardly to check for traffic behind while he was parking. He also suffered minor burn injuries to his face from the hot air which escaped when his airbag deployed.

The driver of the Vauxhall Corsa also sustained a serious head injury and was rushed straight to hospital. Although the accident occurred right outside a school, fortunately no pupils sustained injuries.

Expert legal advice

The young man agreed that he would like to go ahead and make a claim against the driver who caused the accident. Under the representation of an approved solicitor who we appointed to represent him, he went on to receive £11,800 in compensation for the injuries that he sustained as well as the damage to his car.
