About airbag injuries

Airbags are designed to cushion and protect you following a road accident by rapidly inflating, then deflating, providing further protection to that which is offered by seat belts. However, the process of deploying an airbag is violent and can often result in injuries, including burns, bruising, fractures and even loss of hearing. Common causes include:

  • The propellant used to inflate the airbag can combust, causing respiratory and eye irritation
  • The combustion could cause burns to our chest, neck, face and arms
  • The force of the deployment can cause bruising and abrasions to your skin
  • The noise of the explosive device that inflates the airbag can cause hearing loss
  • If you’ve braced yourself against the panel, you could suffer broken bones in the hand, wrist and arm

As well as the injuries mentioned above, there have also been reports of chest damage due to the speed at which the airbag is deployed. These include rib and sternum fractures and bruising, rupture of the aorta, damaged breast implants, pneumonia and heart attacks.

These injuries, although they might not be as severe as the collision itself, may still have an adverse affect on your life. If they were caused by somebody else’s negligence, then you are entitled to make a claim for compensation.

Who is responsible?

If the airbag that caused your injury was defective in design or manufacture, the manufacturer will likely be held responsible. A defect can include:

  • Any design flaws
  • Manufacturing mistakes
  • Errors during assembly
  • Failure to include warning labels
  • Incorrect directions in user manual on safety

If a manufacturer was responsible for a defective airbag that caused you an injury, you are eligible to make a claim for compensation.
