Common skate park injuries

According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, (RoSPA) skaters have suffered from:

  • Sprains
  • Fractures
  • Contusions and abrasions
  • Blunt trauma
  • Skull fractures
  • Concussion

These injuries could probably have been prevented if the skater was wearing the correct protective gear. In some situations though, an accident suffered by a member of the public could be caused by negligence on the part of the manager or an employee.

One of the leading factors which cause falls among more experienced riders are bumps and holes in or around the riding surface. If a manager or employee did not take appropriate steps to repair damage or inform skaters of the danger, they could potentially be liable for any injuries resulting from the hazard.

Skate park liability and responsibility

A manager or employee has to ensure there are no hazards on the site, such as:

  • Broken or damaged ramps and riding surfaces,
  • obstacles which could constitute a risk,
  • non-existent or incorrect warning signs,
  • surface water.

If a skater suffers an injury caused by poorly maintained equipment or a damaged riding surface, the skate park's insurance company may have to pay appropriate compensation to the victim.
