About police accidents

Members of the police force are placed at risk regularly due to the nature of the job, especially those who are out on the streets interacting with the public. Police should be provided with adequate safety equipment, such as bullet or stab-proof vests. Serious or life-threatening injuries are far more likely to occur if this equipment is faulty or not provided at all.

Although there is a wide range of scenarios in which officers may suffer an injury, some are more common than others.

For example, police officers are often involved in high-speed car chases and on-foot pursuits, and are required to attend incidents as quickly as they can when called upon. Officers can be involved in serious road traffic accidents when other road users are irresponsible and unsafe in their actions.

Incidents can also happen when a suspect is in possession of an untrained or unruly dog, who may have become excited by a flurry of activity stirred up when officers attend a call out.

Accidents occasionally happen when officers have not been given the correct training and use potentially harmful equipment incorrectly. They can also occur when officers are being trained to work with animals, such as dogs and horses.

Who is responsible?

The police have a challenging job protecting the public and serving local communities, whether they work in a large city such as London, Manchester or Birmingham, or for a smaller force elsewhere in the country. Police officers accept an element of risk when they choose to join the force, but they should expect senior officers to do all they can to ensure their safety, as would be the case with any other employer.

If you have have been involved in an accident and the negligence of your senior officers contributed to the incident, and the injuries you have sustained, you are entitled to compensation.

The impact of an injury

An injury can have a serious impact on your life, even after you have made a recovery and returned to work. You may be left with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or find that you are physically impaired in such a manner that you may be forced into taking a desk job temporarily or permanently. That’s why making a claim for compensation is so important as you will be able to get financial help with any expenses or losses incurred as a result of your injuries.

Many people are apprehensive about making a claim against their employers, but you have a right to compensation if your injuries are as the result of negligence and most employers will have employer’s liability insurance to cover accidents and injuries.
