If you have been injured at work, log onto twitter and HSE will tell you your rights

Having a good knowledge of health and safety regulations can help prevent you from becoming injured at work. However, few workers have the time, or the inclination to sit down and read through the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) legislation to see what safety standards their employers should be conforming to.

With many companies and organisations, including the HSE, now on Twitter, keeping updated and informed on the latest work accident prevention schemes and safety regulations is now less of an arduous and time consuming task.

In April 2008, the HSE developed a new strategy for combating work accidents. This included a new employee-centred scheme to try and involve workers in taking an active role in improving the safety of their work place. While the HSE certainly still places the primary responsibility of health and safety in the workplace with the employer, its new employee approach is aimed at encouraging workers to take more interest in the safety of their place of work.

According to research obtained by the HSE, evidence suggests that involving workers in the health and safety of their workplace has a positive effect on health and safety performance. Practices such as opening a Twitter account have been employed by the HSE as a method for reaching out to workers and getting their interest in safety policy.

While the majority of the HSE's Twitter feeds are centred on useful information for employers and employees about the latest health and safety initiatives, they also link to fun and interesting news stories and virals which comically highlight the dangers of poor health and safety at work awareness

In less than a year, the HSE Twitter account had generated nearly 2,000 followers. Given the general content of the tweets, this is a very respectable figure and suggests that its plan of engaging both employees and employers seems to be working.

Good health and safety practice is essential for preventing work accidents. While the main responsibility for ensuring good health and safety practice remains in the hands of the employers, it is important that employees recognise their responsibility for ensuring their own safety while at work.

If you are injured in a work accident and you believe that your employer is negligent in creating the circumstances of your accident, you could be entitled to make a personal injury compensation claim.
