In 2009, the MP John Cruddas described the asbestos-related conditions that may lead to mesothelioma compensation as a "working-class disease" while supporting Asbestos Victim Support Day.
Common sense would seem to support such a claim; if the industrial diseases are the result of exposure to the mineral fibres, then those who spend most time working with them would appear to have the greatest chance of suffering a condition such as asbestosis. It is the blue-collar staff of a business who are, generally, closest to the machines and materials, and - if the logic holds - would therefore be most likely to suffer from related illnesses.
Much of the history of the condition would also support this. The diagnoses reported in the press are often of people who worked in roles such as machinists, but this is not true in every case. The campaign to remove asbestos fibres from all schools, for example, is a result of finding that a number of teachers have contracted the condition, and the death of the Bishop of Peterborough from mesothelioma, within a few days of Cruddas' claim, shows that it is not exclusively a condition of the working class.
However, the condition does still seem to be weighted in favour of Cruddas' description. The MP's insistence that "This is about the powerful and the little guy" suggests that this is one representative speaking in favour of the rights of asbestos cancer sufferers.
