Work-related road traffic accident facts that occur on the roads

When people think of accidents at work, they usually think of industrial injuries and factory accidents. However, work-related accidents are not always actually in the workplace. Each year, thousands of people are injured in work-related accidents on the roads of the UK.

Research commissioned by the Department of the Environment has shown that even after annual mileage is taken into account, occupational drivers (like public transport drivers) have up to 50% more vehicle accidents than private drivers.

The findings showed that car drivers who do a high work mileage have a much greater risk of receiving personal injuries in road accidents than motorists who do drive as part of their work.

According to the study, drivers who do more than 80 per cent of their annual mileage on work-related journeys have about 53 per cent more road accidents than similar drivers with no work-related mileage.
