Work related accidents in clothes shops

As clothes shops battle each other for high-street dominance, companies may decide to make their shops stand out from the rest by remodelling the interiors of their stores and decorating in a manner which is completely different from the usual retail firms.

Although this is exiting for customers who like a new shopping experience, and usually a good business idea as people are attracted by the new interior and may visit the shop more often and buy more items as a result, it can also pose a safety risk.

Some shops on the high-street, in their efforts to stay one step ahead of other stores and appear to provide more desirable clothes and accessories, may begin to put their workers at risk with hazardous store decorations and fittings.

For example, some shops now operate with their lights dimmed very low, and decorate in a similar way to an expensive hotel might do in order to appear more fashionable than other clothing brands.

This might make for an interesting browsing experience and make the shop stand out from the others, but it can result in customers accidentally brushing clothes onto the floor while they search through the rails and shelves and cause trip hazards in the dark environment.

Furthermore, due to the layout of some stores, decorative stand-up lamps, which in hotels are usually placed out of the way in corners, are scattered all around the shop – this may also cause a trip hazard due to electrical cord trailing along the floor.

As well as being a danger to people visiting the store, it also increases the risk of a work related accident occurring.

Ideally, shops will be well-lit to reduce the risk of shoppers and employees falling over items on the floor and there will be no trailing wires.
