Work-related back injury and falling goods
05/10/2004

Many cases of work-related back injury are caused by incorrect lifting of heavy loads, sitting with poor posture at an office desk or suffering a fall from height accident. However, some of the spinal injuries sustained in the workplace are caused when something falls onto an individual.

From warehouses and factories to storeroom cupboards and supermarket displays, it is important that any person employed to stack products is trained to do so safely so that a passer-by is not injured by falling items.

Similarly, it is important that any individual in charge of building shelving or supports upon which a load is to stand, has also been trained to do so correctly so that the risk of the shelving collapsing is reduced.

Depending on how heavy a load is, the personal injury which could be suffered by someone unfortunate enough to be underneath the falling items could vary in severity from bruises and scratches, to being paralysed or death.

To minimise the likelihood of a serious accident occurring, which may result in a compensation claim being made by the employee as well as a prosecution by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), firms can follow these simple HSE inspired guidelines.

  • Make sure that the ground upon which the goods are resting is not slippery, uneven or sloped. If it is, rectify the problem or move the products elsewhere;

  • Store heavy or large items at the bottom of the pile, and lighter or smaller items at the top. This should help reduce the hazard of the stack toppling, while also making it easier for workers to lift items off when needed;

  • Make sure that all items on the stack are easily accessible by workers or customers. If something is hard to reach it may lead to the stack being pushed over by accident.

For the full HSE page on safe stacking, simply go to their website.

Whether the stacked items are piled on top of one another or resting on shelving, and whether the goods are only accessible by workers or are to be picked up and viewed by customers, for people's safety storage units and stand-alone stacks should be made secure.

Sustaining a work related back injury
A back injury can render an employee unable to work for a few weeks, or keep them out of work for the rest of their lives. If you, or a family member, have suffered a work-related injury due to the negligence of your employer, you could be entitled to make a compensation claim for your pain, suffering and loss of earnings.
