RIDDOR and work-related accident fears
Fleet road safety groups across the UK have expressed concern about whether employee personal injury work-related accident information will be included in RIDDOR (Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations) figures and statistical data analysis.
RIDDOR is a compulsory reporting system for all work-related personal injuries. Companies are required by law, according to 1995 regulations, to report employee road traffic accidents which result in them being off work for more than three days in a row.
Current legislation has been in the process of review for over a year. During this time, the matter of whether work-related accidents while driving for a company should be included alongside other employee accident at work reporting issues has been under discussion.
Five years ago, the work-related road safety task group recommended that road traffic work-related accidents should be included in regulations, although there was some debate about whether the employer would be liable and obliged to report work-related driving accidents, or the particular employee involved.
Occupational safety advisor for RoSPA Roger Bibbings has commented on using the issue to send a signal to the senior management of companies that they have to do something about at work risk, saying "it has been missed."
BECTU member Dave Williams was awarded £4,000 in compensation damages last August (2006) after a work-related road traffic accident. The accident occurred when Mr Williams was hit by another car on the M40, leaving him with personal injuries and whiplash.
He claimed for accident compensation successfully through a firm of personal injury solicitors after seeking trade union advice and his employer was found liable. Before the accident he did not know that his union membership covered vehicle accidents for driving at work as well as other work-related accidents.
