If you have suffered a work-related accident caused by scaffolding, our expert no win no fee solicitors could help you receive 100% compensation for your pain and loss of earnings.
An average of 50 people die every year in the UK due to collapsing scaffolding and more than 4,500 individuals suffer personal injuries because scaffolding is defective or faulty.
It is not only poorly built or badly maintained scaffolding which causes accidents, however. Employees, whether they are on a large or small building site, may not manage to erect a scaffolding structure in one go and it might be left unfinished until workers have time to continue its construction.
Unless a warning sign is attached to scaffolding to warn people not to use the frame, since it is likely to be unstable, an employee may get hurt trying to use the scaffold before it is completed.
Signs such as "scaffold incomplete do not use" should be placed in a visible area so that workers do not use it before it is secure.
Ideally, barriers will be placed around the whole scaffold to stop anyone attempting to climb it before its completion. If this procedure is followed, a warning sign should be placed on the barriers at each access point.
Another, simple way, of stopping workers from climbing a potentially unsteady structure is by removing all ladders and walkway planks. By doing this employees have no way of safely climbing the scaffolding and so are much less likely to attempt to use it.
It is a building site supervisor's or manager's overall responsibility to make sure that someone fixes warning signs on incomplete scaffolding. If scaffolding is not secure, and a worker suffers personal injury as a result, it is probable that liability for the incident will be placed jointly with the employer of the injured party and possibly with the scaffolding contractor.
It is very important that only suitably qualified scaffolders are employed to erect a scaffold. If inexperienced or under-qualified individuals are allowed to undertake work on a structure which they have not been trained how to build correctly there is a greater risk of accident occurring.
