Work-related injury and illness in the North East

The latest Health and Safety Executive (HSE) figures detailing work injuries and work-related illnesses in Britain have given employers, workers and health and safety bosses in the North East of England a real headache.

The figures, which show the North East to have the highest rates of work-related illnesses in the UK, will come as no surprise to the nation's personal injury lawyers, who are all to familiar with handling work injury compensation claims emanating from the region.

Reporting work-related illnesses at a rate of 6,060 per 100,000 workers, the North East comes top of the nation's list, even trumping other work-related illness hotbeds such as London and Scotland.

Worryingly, the North East also tops the list for the reporting of work injuries, recording figures of 1,380 work-related injuries for every 100,000 workers. Although figures detailing the types of injury are at the time of writing (Dec 2007) not yet available, the HSE anticipate that work-related musculoskeletal injuries will account for significant proportion of all reported injuries. The HSE's prediction is likely to be accurate, no win, no fee experts YouClaim have received many musculoskeletal work injury compensation claims during this period.

The North East, however, is not home to the highest rates of work-related fatalities. The South East was the region which recorded highest number of work-related deaths in the period 2006/2007, with 35 deaths confirmed.

North East regional director of the Health and Safety Executive, David Snowball, commented, "We know that health and safety processes are stubborn matters to address, even though precautions are often simple to implement and so that is where we will focus our preventive effort with employers who have a legal duty to protect their employees.

"We will continue to take enforcement action against those who fail to meet their legal responsibilities to provide healthy and safe work places."

Judith Hackitt, Chair of the Health and Safety Commission, also offered her thoughts, "Never mind banning conkers or Christmas decorations, look at these figures. This is what health and safety is about.

"The figures released today show the real risks faced by real people, every day of their working lives, and the suffering that occurs when health and safety processes fail.

"Employers have a legal duty to protect their employees and visible leadership from the top of the organisation can truly influence health and safety culture in our changing work environments."
