Report shows employers risking work injury compensation claims

As a company that handles personal injury cases for people who have been hurt in the workplace, YouClaim sees a whole range of work injury compensation claims. The number of these claims that we handle has gone up in the past few years, which is not surprising given the results of recent research from the Health and Safety Commission (HSC).

Work injuries in Wales
According to the HSC, around 130,000 people in Wales suffered some kind of work-related illness or injury in 2006/2007. Whilst some of the people suffering from medical complaints said that they had occurred as a direct result of their work, others reported that their current or previous job had made an existing medical condition worse.

A spokesperson for the HSC said: "Never mind banning conkers or Christmas decorations, look at these figures this is what real health and safety is all about. The figures released today show the real dangers faced by real people, every day of their working lives and the suffering that occurs when health and safety processes fail."

The HSC also revealed that the work injuries and illnesses that people were suffering from in 2006/2007 resulted in 2.5 million working days being lost in Wales alone. This is equivalent to each worker taking 2.2 days off sick due to their workplace injury, costing companies many millions of pounds. The research does not detail the amount of work injury compensation claims made by employees nor how much this costs businesses in the country.

However, the HSC report does include information on those Health and Safety Executive prosecutions which were linked to injury in the workplace. It shows that in the 2006/2007 year, the HSE made 52 successful prosecutions, with a further 10 being unsuccessful. Whilst the average fine was £31,213, this was somewhat distorted by a million pound fine in the Corus case.

A spokesperson for the Health and Safety Executive said: "We use a range of enforcement measures to tackle workplace ill-health and injuries and we do not hesitate to prosecute where necessary. The rising enforcement figures show that negligence in workplace health and safety is not tolerated."
