Business size and work injury compensation claims

If you are considering making a work injury compensation claim, then you are not alone. It is estimated that around one in ten workers in the UK have sustained a workplace injury in the past five years.

This is significant figure and is a real cost to the economy. But more significantly, workplace injuries come as a cost to the individual. They have an emotional, physical and financial cost, all of which may, at some point, necessitate a work injury compensation claim.

The most common workplace injury is of the musculoskeletal variety and usually affects the back and spine. This kind of injury is most commonly caused by lifting, carrying or loading and unloading.

One leading study by the insurance industry suggested that around 80% of workplace injuries are sustained in work accidents usually the kind a worker can make a work injury compensation claim for.

One surprising and disturbing assertion of the study was the finding that nearly 10% of workplace injuries are caused by physical attacks perpetrated by either a client or a workmate.

The large-business small-business divide
For reasons as yet unclear, there appears to be a sliding scale that determines an employee's probability of becoming involved in a work accident. This sliding scale is based on the size of company an employee works for: the smaller the company, the less the statistical likelihood of suffering work injury.

In fact, it has been found that employees in companies with workforces of more than 250 are around twice as likely to suffer a work injury than those in smaller or medium-sized companies.

This trend continued throughout the study. Workers in businesses with less than nine employees had even less chance of becoming involved in a work accident. Only 17% of its workers report having suffered a work accident, compared to 47% of those in large businesses.

Inevitably, this means that large percentage of work injury compensation claims are made by workers who have suffered injuries while working for large-scale organisations.
