Work injury compensation claims and poorly designed offices

It has long been known that a poorly designed and laid out office can be a factor in a work injury compensation claim, but now research from Queensland University of Technology has revealed that a workplace's design can also adversely affect the health, stress-levels, creativity and productivity of workers.

Led by Dr Vinesh Ooman, the Queensland University of Technology team reviewed all previous studies on the effects of workplace environment on worker health and found evidence that the impact of open-plan offices is "absolutely shocking".

Dr Ooman explains, "In 90 per cent of research, the outcome of working in an open-plan office was seen as negative, with open-plan offices causing high levels of stress, conflict, high blood pressure, and a high staff turnover.

"It has been found that the high level of noise causes employees to lose concentration, leading to low productivity.

"There are privacy issues because everyone can see what you are doing on the computer or hear what you are saying on the phone, and there is a feeling of insecurity."

"There is also a higher chance of workplace conflicts - sitting so close to someone each time their phone rings, you can get irritated. Most of us can relate to that.

"The research found that the traditional design was better - small, private, closed offices.

"The problem is that employers are always looking for ways to cut costs.

"But having a office environment that promotes health and high productivity would be more beneficial to employers in the long run."

And, since a healthy, happy and productive workplace also has a strong association with a low rate of work accidents, abandoning an open-plan office in favour of smaller-scale, closed offices may also reduce a business's risk of facing the expensive and time-consuming prospect of employee work injury compensation claims.
