Work injury compensation claims and the changing roles of doctors

The vast majority of people who make work injury compensation claims will hope to be able to return to fulltime employment as soon as possible. For most, returning to fulltime work will be a very real and near possibility, for others, however, being fit and well enough to make this step will take time, patience, hard work and rehabilitation. Unfortunately, for a small but significant minority, their injuries will mean that they will never again be able to return to the stimulation of a normal career and will be forced to rely on the money awarded them in their work injury compensation claim in order to make ends meet.

Recently, government figures such as the work and pensions secretary James Purnell have begun to realise the "crucial" role doctors perform in helping people who have suffered serious injury return to work. Increasingly, it is being understood that doctors can not only assist people in a return to physical health but that they can also facilitate this happening in other ways, such as promoting good psychological health and fostering a "work first" mentality to reemployment.

Part of this mentality involves getting injured people to focus on what they can do rather than what they can't do. Doctors can assist in this by concentrating on people's abilities rather than their limitations. While the primary motivation for this new approach to work is motivated by a desire to reduce the number of adults receiving incapacity benefit by 1 million before 2015, it will inevitably help people injured in work accidents better assimilate to new workplaces once they are ready to return to fulltime employment.

James Purnell explains the new ethos, "Work is good for your health. For too long it has been automatically assumed that a return to work would be bad for your health.

"The health profession are recognising the role that work can play in getting people fit and healthy and it will create a crucial culture change for the welfare state.

"I want to make sure that we give GPs the support they need to help their patients see that work can be part of the solution not part of the problem, and that's why we'll be rolling out a new national training programme developed with their needs in mind."
