Work injury compensation claims are never more tragic than when they are made by the family and dependants of workers who have been killed in fatal workplace incidents.
In 2007/08 180 people were killed in work accidents in the UK, with the majority of these tragedies resulting in work injury compensation claims. Clearly, this number of deaths is unacceptable, particularly in construction, which, staggeringly, accounted for more than one-quarter of all fatalities.
Despite this shocking picture, not enough is done to recognise the tragedy and hardship of fatal workplace injuries. However, this may be about to change if the government follows through on proposals to make Workers Memorial Day a national bank holiday.
Yvette Cooper, the secretary of state for work and pensions, comments, "It is a tragedy that some people go out to work and then never return home to their families. I want to look at what the UK can do to remember the thousands of workers who have lost their lives."I know there are many ideas for consideration, including a lasting memorial. Many countries already recognise Workers Memorial Day, to commemorate those who have been killed, seriously injured or made ill through work."
The UK would not be the first to mark the day with a national public holiday; countries such as Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Luxembourg, Peru, Portugal, Spain, Thailand, Taiwan and the USA have already demonstrated their level of commitment by taking the initiative that Britain may now follow.
Unions have expressed support for the idea. A spokesperson from Unison says, "The fact that 180 people a year die at work is a tragedy. Making Workers Memorial Day a bank holiday would remind employers that they must do all they can to protect the health and safety of their staff."
