HSE introduce falls from vehicles campaign to reduce work injury claims

According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), around 2000 employees sustain serious work injury caused by falls from vehicles every year. On average, a total of five workers die and many of those who have been harmed and their families make work injury claims for compensation.

The majority of these falls are from below head height (90%) and the estimated cost of these incidents including days taken off and work injury claims accumulates to £36.7 million.

Most at risk are those who work at height on vehicles such as refuse collectors who stand on the back or side of the dustcart when collecting rubbish, farm workers who stand on the back of trailers when planting crops or transferring bails of hay, factory workers loading pallets onto lorries, crane drivers as well as construction workers standing on cherry pickers.

Common personal injuries sustained in falls from vehicles in accidents at work include back injuries, neck injuries and head injuries. Broken limbs and contusions are also regularly suffered.
