Football, at all levels of professional and semi-professional competition, has traditionally been seen as a world of machismo where players are taught that if they are injured they should "be a man" and "just take it on the chin" because it is "part of the game". Yet the truth remains that if a player suffers a serious injury requiring extensive medical treatment, it is perfectly possible to make a work injury claim.
For example, in 2008 former Manchester United trainee Ben Collett received £4.5 million after making a work injury claim for career-ending tackle by a Middlesbrough player that broke his leg in two places.
Obviously not all injury compensation amounts will be of this size. The multi-million pound figure reflected the fact that football experts such as Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson predicted a bright future for the former trainee.
International sports lawyer, Ian Brackshaw explains, "Just because somebody has come through the academy and has started to play, it doesn't necessarily follow that the next 12 years will be brilliant, and that has to be reflected in the level of damages."
The ex-player's personal injury lawyer confirmed that the settlement was the largest of its kind in legal history, adding, "The size of the award reflects his talent and potential as one of the brightest young footballers in the country."
Another prominent sports claim specialist personal injury lawyer, from firm Higgs & Sons, says that if players suffer injury in the usual and reasonable rough and tumble of the game, compensation is unlikely to be paid out, but if they suffer injury as a result of malevolent or reckless play, the chances of making a successful claim are considerably higher.
"If an injury occurs out of these circumstances, then the injured player may have grounds to seek compensation from the opposing 'negligent' player and should consider seeking legal advice," she says.
