Safety tips for roof working to avoid work injury claims

Some of the worst work injury claims occur after falls from height and, according to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), they remain the most common reason behind workplace death.

The HSE website contains information regarding working at height and how to avoid accidents and the consequence of work injury claims.

Minor roof work safety tips to avoid work injury claims
Even minor roof work carries a host of dangers and risks, so the HSE have devised a set of tips for minor roof work.

  • Minor roof work is such that it only involves a small area and will be relatively quick to complete; minutes, not hours. The employer should know fully what the job entails and they should ensure that anyone employed to carry out the work should have relevant experience and training.
  • The work should be properly planned before commencement; including a risk assessment and plan of action in an emergency or in the event of a fall from height. Workers for the job should be involved in the planning and choice of equipment to be used.
  • The roof must be checked to see if it strong enough to bear the weight of workers and all equipment required.
  • Nothing should be able to fall from the roof and injure people below. If there is a risk of this, then the area below should be kept clear of persons.
  • The workers should take frequent breaks, especially if working from a ladder a worker on a ladder needs to take a break after every 30 minutes of work.
  • When using a ladder there must be three points of contact wherever possible.
  • If hired equipment is being used the employer must make sure he and all workers know how to use it competently and safely; and how it needs to be installed and dismantled correctly.
