The latest, and largest ever, British Safety Council survey into workplace safety has done little to instil confidence that we might soon witness a reduction in the rate of work injury claims.
The survey, entitled "Safe and Sound" paints a troubling picture of endemic complacency among some UK employers.
The annual cost of compensation
According to the organisation, businesses spend around £7.8 billion on work injury claim-related costs each year, working out to an astonishing £250 a second.
The true cost to the wider economy is even more startling, totalling some £31.8 billion each year, or £1,000 a second enough money to build 10 new hospitals a year.
The level of training a lot to be desired
The BSC, which works with businesses to educate and train employers over safety issues, also found that more than half of employers failed to provide basic safety training for their workers, while 62% of employees reported receiving little or no training.
Medium and small sized businesses as well as the construction industry were found to be the sectors where employees were at the greatest risk.
The view from the British Safety Council
Brian Nimick, chief executive of the BSC, feels that the unique predicament of small and medium sized companies should be understood. He said, "British bosses need to know whether they are doing the right thing. The problem is that businesses, particularly those of a small or medium size, are overwhelmed by the mountains of confusing red tape.
"Businesses need clear and simple guidelines so that measures such as training for health and safety are seen as an asset, not a burden.
"Health and safety in the workplace saves lives and families. Companies need to see this as a priority and also as an investment. We export British health and safety standards all over the world, but there is much to do still at home."
He also spoke of the seriousness regarding fatal and serious workplace injuries, "What is of real concern is that this survey follows on from the statistics last year from the Health and Safety Executive, which show that 241 people were killed in the workplace.
"This is the highest recorded overall figure since 2001 and equates to one death at work every working day. We believe thatsix billion working days have been lost to workplace injury every year.
"With 274,00 people injured last year, that equates to one worker being injured almost every minute of the working week."
