Work injury claims and trapdoor accidents

All too often trap doors give rise to workplace accidents and work injury claims when their potential for hazard should be clear to all.

There are many different types of trapdoor used across workplaces in the UK, but whether they are internal or external, automatic or manual, a high level of safety management and risk assessment is required if accidents are to be avoided.

Below are some examples of the types of incidents that can occur if there is neglect of basic precautions.

Chemist trapdoor accident
Many of the UK's retail shops have trapdoors above cellars, often for stock loading. It was in one such shop, a leading high street pharmacy, that in 2011 a 76-year-old person suffered multiple personal injuries after falling through an unguarded trapdoor.

The chemist later admitted that it had failed to erect signs warning of the danger of the trapdoor, had negligently left the trapdoor unattended and had failed to properly train staff of best health and safety practice around trapdoors.

The chemist was fined £5,000 while accident compensation was paid to the injured customer.

Pub trapdoor accident
Trapdoors are a feature of many of the UK's pubs. In 2011 a London man made a successful five-figure work injury claim for the back injury he sustained as a result of falling through an open trapdoor at a pub in central London.

Although the man made a good recovery from his injury, he was forced to take several weeks off work to recover from his injury and admitted that he was "lucky to be alive".
