A hernia may be a work injury

Work injury is a broad term that can range from being caught in an explosion on a construction site to suffering RSI at an office desk. One of the conditions that may be contained within the term is a hernia.

Generally, a hernia is the name given to the condition where part of the body's internal systems protrude through the muscles or membranes that are supposed to contain it. There are various kinds, of which the most common is the inguinal hernia, where a section of the bladder or intestine pushes through a natural weakness in the body where the thigh joins the abdomen - and is more common in men than women.

It is possible to suffer this condition as a result of overexertion, whether that means hoisting bricks or pushing a filing cabinet, and if this overexertion is a result of management negligence, such as failing to train workers in the correct lifting technique to avoid personal injury, then a work accident claim may well be a viable option.

Treatment for the condition has improved in recent decades, as a synthetic mesh has been developed that allows the weakness in the body's walls to be repaired more firmly - but strenuous activity must be avoided for approximately two months, which may cause loss of earnings for the sufferer of personal injury. This may also be considered in a compensation claim.
