In the fight against bad practices that lead to work injury, it is always good to see a local paper taking up the mantle against employers who don't do their bit to ensure worker safety.
In May 2009, the Grimsby Telegraph reported on a factory accident involving a teenager who suffered serious injuries whilst cleaning machinery.
The accident was a straightforward case of negligence on the part of the employers as they had failed to keep a guard on a vent in a good working order. The employee became trapped in the vent – which was there to prevent access to a dangerous rotating auger – and was stuck for over an hour before the emergency services were able to free him.
He was unable to return to work after the accident which caused significant work injury.
The owners of the factory, who were prosecuted for breaching the Health and Safety at Work Act, were fined and ordered to pay court costs.
They told the paper, "We very much regret [the employee's] accident and are assisting him in his rehabilitation with the aim of returning him to employment at the earliest opportunity."
No mention was made as to whether the employee instigated a personal injury compensation claim against the firm.
The paper also researched the safety record of businesses in the area and found some "shocking" statistics.
The writers revealed that in 2007/2008, for every 100,000 employees in the Yorkshire and Humber region 778.8 were injured in work accidents. Locally, 16 workers were killed and 2.8 million days were taken off due to work injury or work-related illness.
It was revealed that in the same year local authorities brought 40 cases against employers accused of various safety issues, all of which led to successful convictions. The average fine was £4,325.
It is almost certain that the average amount of compensation for work injury accidents awarded to employees would be significantly higher.
