Shift work accidents

Working night shifts has long been recognised as a work accident hazard. Indeed, as far back as 1802, when the Act for the Preservation of the Health and Morals of Apprentices in Cotton and other Mills prohibited workers from working outside the hours of 9am to 6pm, employers and legislators alike have been cognisant of the risk.

The reasons for this are various, but any short explanation must acknowledge the vital role the endocrine and circadian systems play in concentration and awareness: any disruption to these systems caused by night work can significantly undermine the efficiency and safety of workers.

There are other, less clear cut, factors too. In a 2004 edition of the Monthly Labour Review Kenneth N Forston examined a series of data related to no win, no fee compensation claims made for nighttime workplace incidents; the results were interesting.

Forston found that nighttime workforces were: more likely to be younger and less experienced; more likely to be reaching the tail-end of long shifts; and more likely to be performing dangerous work than their daytime colleagues.

Whatever the case, with around 3.5 million employees in the UK engaged in some form of shift work, employers need to be particularly vigilant about ensuring their workforces are protected from all possible hazards.
