HSE's vision for reducing work accidents

On 3 June 2009 the Health and Safety Executive launched its five-year plan The Health and Safety of Great Britain: Be Part of the Solution, one of the most important work accident prevention strategy documents ever released in the UK.

Judith Hackitt, HSE's chair said that the "strategy represents a clear statement of core principles and a sensible approach to health and safety in Great Britain. "Whilst the economic climate is difficult and the temptation for some may be to cut corners, HSE, its partners and businesses must resolve to continue to strive to improve health and safety performance. Good health and safety is good business," she added.

The government lent its wholehearted support to the document, with the Secretary for State and Pensions saying, "There are too many clichés about the role of ‘health and safety' in our society.  But amidst ridiculous myths about banning donkey rides and flip flops, the fact is that too many people are still needlessly killed or injured. The fact that some people go out to work and never return home to their families is a human tragedy. The new HSE strategy recognises that a significant challenge now faces everyone with a stake in health and safety. We need to do everything we can to drive down the toll of death and injury."

However, launch of the strategy has not passed without criticism. Families Against Corporate Killers (FACK) say that it strategy does "nothing new" to prevent the most serious kinds of work accident.

"There is nothing strong enough to show us that justice will prevail nor that employers like those who felt free to ignore existing health and safety law and kill the people we loved will be compelled to comply in the future," a FACK spokesperson commented.

Adding, "Without massive increases in resources and inspectors behaving like real enforcers, we cannot see how a strategy that merely encourages those who take the risks with our lives to behave better can possibly succeed."
