Work accidents and statistical analysis roles in the HSE

In order to reduce the number of work accidents that occur in the UK we must first understand why they happen, where they happen, and how often they happen.

It is statistics that help us address these three questions. Perhaps the most important role in the statistical assessment of work accidents is played by the Health and Safety Executive's Head of Statistics.

What does the HSE Head of Statistics do?
The Head of Statistics has "overall responsibility for the implementation and co-ordination of professional statistical standards across the HSE and, according to the job description, "manages a team of around 30 statisticians, with a view to analysing all data relevant to UK workplace accidents."

The role also encompasses other aspects such as effective liaison with other relevant civil service professionals, including the Chief Economist and the Head of Social Research.

It is also a role that to some degree allows influence on the direction of HSE policy through both key relationships within the health and safety community and the identification of key problems in the British workplace.

The Head of Statistics is also a member of the Government Statistical Service (GSS), a body which ensures the integrity of, and public confidence in, official government statistics.
