Office worker makes successful accident at work compensation claim
In January 2006 we received a telephone call from an office junior in Yorkshire who suffered serious personal injuries in an accident at work.
The 18-year-old had been employed with the city-based company for only a matter of weeks when her work accident occurred she decided to make a compensation claim because she felt her employers had failed to provide a safe working environment.
She told one of our claims advisors that as an office junior she was required to make tea and coffee for visitors and would need to use the upstairs kitchen to carry out this task.
The teenager claimed that while she was carrying a tray of hot drinks back downstairs to the boardroom, she slipped on a piece of loose carpet and fell to the bottom of the staircase, suffering multiple workplace injuries.
As she fell, the tray of hot drinks splashed over her bare arms, and the fall had caused her to sustain a broken ankle and fractured wrist. She was taken to hospital and had the ankle put in a cast; doctors told her that she would have to take four months off work to recover from her personal injuries.
Resting her ankle at home and watching television, she saw an advert on TV about making personal injury claims for accidents at work. She decided that she would seek free legal advice about making a claim and searched the internet for reputable companies.
When she typed "work accident compensation claim" into the search engine, she found the YouClaim website, which gave her all the information she needed to reassure her that making a claim against her employer was the right thing to do.
She phoned up the free number and spoke to one of our friendly claims advisors who then forwarded her case to a personal injury solicitor. The solicitor believed that her employer could have prevented the accident at work by removing or replacing the staircase carpet. It was also discovered that another employee had made a note in the accident book four weeks previously after they had also slipped of the loose carpet.
The office junior was asked to visit an independent medical expert who would be able to officially assess the level of her personal injuries but after that she left the case in the hands of the solicitor. Seven months later she was awarded injury compensation for her accident.
The young woman was awarded a total of 6,800, which included 3,250 for her ankle injury, 2,050 for her wrist injury and 1,500 for burns and minor scaring. She told us she was satisfied with the amount of compensation she was awarded for her work accident and that YouClaim made the whole compensation process a lot easier than she originally thought it would be.
