HSE announces record low number of fatal work accidents

In 2009, Health and Safety statisticians reported a record low number of work accident fatalities for a single year in the UK, with 180 workers killed in 2008/2009. Furthermore, they reported that this number is a 17% drop in fatalities compared to the previous record, 217 in 2005/2006.

Yet, the truth remains that one death is a tragedy and fact that 180 workers failed to return home to their families during 2008/2009 means there is still a great deal of work to be done.

HSE chair Judith Hackett helped explain the statistics, "We very much welcome any reduction in the number of workers being fatally injured and the fact that the number for 2009/09 is a record low.

"There is inevitably variation in the figures year on year, but we can take heart from the fact that Great Britain consistently has fewer fatal injuries than comparable industrialised nations in the rest of Europe.

"This statistical snapshot needs careful analysis to help us to understand underlying factors, including the impact of the recession."

She also said that, while the statistics show improvement in the rate of fatal work injuries, they do not tell the whole story, as workers still suffer injury in work accidents, as well as the effects of occupational ill health.

"Work-related ill health is a significant problem and accounts for four times more working days lost than workplace injury, so there is still a major challenge we all face to prevent death, injury and ill health in all of our workplaces," said Hackett.

She added, "These statistics are encouraging but there is no magic wand in health and safety. When those running organisations show personal leadership, and when workers are involved in tackling the risks that they face, safety can be improved and lives saved - that is how we can turn this encouraging sign into real sustained improvement."
