There are over four million workers in the UK aged between 16 and 24 and it is inevitable that a number of these people will at some point in their early careers suffer serious or permanent injuries in accidents at work.
According to figures published in Hazard Magazine (www.hazards.org) a young worker will be involved in a serious accident every 40 minutes, for which they could later make a work accident compensation claim.
In the UK alone, 66 young workers under 19 were killed over the last decade in serious work accidents with an additional 14,500 sustaining serious personal injuries. Read more work accident statistics.
It is thus vital employers taking on inexperienced workers provide the correct training and follow regulations under the Health and Safety Young Persons Regulations 1997.
Regulations for young workers
Under the Health and Safety Young Persons Regulations 1997, employers are required to carry out a full risk assessment and evaluate the person's suitability for the work in hand. This assessment could prevent a worker from sustaining injuries, for which they may later claim personal injury compensation.
If an employer follows such regulations, they should significantly reduce their chance of future work accident compensation claims being made against them through personal injury solicitors.
Working at night
Fatigue can play a major role in causing serious workplace injuries and is something that can easily be prevented if an employer ensures that no young people work for long periods of time during the night.
A young person should not work between 10pm and 6am apart from exceptions in the areas of employment that might include working in hospitals, sports and advertising. Those who work in agriculture, retail trading, postal or newspaper delivering, catering, bakeries and hospitality are permitted to work between 10pm to midnight and between 4am to 7am.
Under the Working Times Regulations, workers aged 16 to 17 are entitled to take 12 hours of rest during a 24 hour period. Workers are also entitled to a rest time of 48 hours for every seven day period, compared to 24 hours for adult workers.
Making a claim if you are under 18 years old
If you would like to make a work accident compensation claim and you're under 18 years of age, you can make you claim with the assistance of a litigation friend.
A litigation friend should be somebody over the age of 18 who can act fairly and proficiently during the claims process. A parent can sometimes act as a litigation friend, but sometimes this practice can be ruled out if the young person has been involved in an accident which could be the fault of the parent.
