Some personal protective equipment (PPE) is expensive and employees need training so that they understand how to use it, However, one type of PPE is relatively cheap to purchase, simple to use and could prevent many incidences of work accident compensation claims.
Invented by Bob Switzer from Ohio, America in the 1930s, high visibility clothing helps workers in all types of environment stand out and be seen.
Mr Switzer's "Day-Glo" advert stated, "Fluorescent colour is seen 75% sooner than conventional colour! Fluorescent colour is three times brighter than regular colour! Your eyes go back to fluorescent colour for a second look 59% of the time!"
Many items of high visibility clothing are available to companies for workers, and to self-employed people, who wish to be more visible to avoid personal injury.
High visability (Hi-Vis) vests, jackets and trousers are easy to see during the day, and many of these items of clothing include retro-reflective stripes on them so that workers remain visible during the night.
Wearing this type of PPE is particularly useful where pedestrian workers could encounter vehicles.
Whether the vehicles are being driven by co-workers or are privately-owned vehicles travelling past where road works are taking place, drivers are more likely to see the employees from a distance and therefore avoid a crash by slowing down or manoeuvring appropriately.
Employees dressed in darker colours may not stand out enough and could be involved in a collision after not being seen in time.
