ETU make uranium asbestos claim

In 2010, during the same week that subsidiaries of RPM International Inc filed for bankruptcy because of the crippling financial impact brought about by asbestos claim litigation, Australia's Electrical Trades Union (ETU) announced that it had moved to ban all its members from working on any form of nuclear work.

The ban was motivated over cancer concerns related to the radioactive chemical element uranium. "Uranium is the new asbestos", stated ETU's state secretary Peter Simpson.

As such, all ETU member nuclear workers in the state of Queensland and the Northern Territory were told to cease work in uranium mines, nuclear power stations or any other workplace that involved some level of potential uranium exposure.

It was a move that could have a far-reaching global impact. Australia possesses around 20% of the world's uranium deposits, as well as more deposits of high-grade uranium ore than any other nation on earth.

It may also have a significant bearing on the no win, no fee claim rate of the future. Asbestos claim litigation has come at a global cost reaching billions, and if the ban averts similar, uranium-related, claims occurring in the future, it may save not only lives but also millions of pounds in compensation payments.

ETU commented, "We are sending a clear message to the industry and the wider community that vested interests in the uranium and nuclear industries are trying to hoodwink us about this dangerous product and industry.

"Corporate interests, and their political supporters in the Labour and Coalition parties, are also trying to buy working families off with high wages, while denying the true short-term and long-term health risks of such jobs."
