Ladder injury, it should be avoidable

It is hard to understand the complacency often reported in health and safety investigations into ladder accidents when you consider the fact that ladder injury incidents account for one-third of all falls from height, which remain the leading cause of workplace fatalities in Britain.

It is still harder to understand why any trades people and employers might use faulty or broken ladders when exchange schemes are in place allowing people to swap broken, bent and damaged ladders for new, undamaged ones.

What schemes like this help highlight is the fact that there is nothing inherently unsafe about using a ladder. In short, as long as they are without fault, undamaged and used in accordance with health and safety regulations, ladders should not be a particular workplace hazard.

A City of Edinburgh Council spokesperson who is involved in the ladder exchange programme in Scotland comments, "There is nothing wrong with using a ladder if it is in good order, right for the job and used properly. However, you could be gambling with your life by using a dodgy one. Too many people suffer life-changing injuries or die each year because they used a faulty ladder. This initiative is open to anyone who wants to swap their broken, bent or damaged ladder for a new one."

A spokesperson from no win, no fee claims specialist YouClaim elaborates on this view. "If every employer and tradesperson in the UK followed proper ladder safety advice, there would be literally hundreds fewer serious workplace accidents each year.

"Our advice to those who use ladders as a matter of course in their work is to never scrimp on safety. Always make sure the ladder you purchase confirms to the relevant industrial safety standards and always inspect and maintain your ladder, checking for any telltale cracks.

"Another precaution that many people forget to take is the need for appropriate footwear that has good grip and will not slip, particularly in wet weather."

"There is no reason why ladder injury should be a necessary hazard of ladder-reliant work. Suitable and well-maintained equipment, sufficient training and correct risk assessments have the potential to eliminate all ladder-related accidents."
