More Australian research into road accident whiplash

In recent years Australia has established itself as the world leader in whiplash research.

In 2009 the nation's supremacy in the field of car accident neck injury research shows no sign of being threatened, with several landmark studies being conducted.

One such study is being carried out at University of Queensland and seeks to help chronic sufferers of the condition by examining both its physical and its psychological aspects.

Under the leadership of renowned expert Dr Michelle Sterling, the study will focus not only on these personal factors, but also the economic burden caused by the injury.

Dr Sterling, who has researched this most common of car crash injuries since 1997, comments, "Over 5000 people are affected by whiplash from motor vehicle accidents in Queensland each year.
"While most people respond really well to current treatments, around 20 to 25 percent of people develop chronic symptoms, and experience pain and disability for longer than three months. It is this group that will be the focus. Our aim is to identify people that are at risk of not recovering well and to find better treatments for them."

One significant aspect of the study is the way it will rely on the forming of interdisciplinary partnershipsn with other health professionals, including therapists from UQ's Centre of National Research on Disability and Rehabilitation (CONROD) and psychologists from the School of Psychology.
