Pins and needles caused by whiplash can be a major pain

Car accidents are not the only cause of whiplash and its associated injuries. Whiplash symptoms can be felt after any impact that causes hyperextension and hyperflexion of muscles in the neck (cervical spine), such as a fall or bang to the head.

There are many symptoms of whiplash, the most common being neck pain, but perhaps one of the most worrying is something that most of us would usually deem merely an innocuous annoyance.

Pins and needles usually occur when one has sat or stood for too long in a static position with a limb crossed or rested upon. This can lead to pressure being placed on the nerve and the blood supply to the nerve being reduced. This in turn causes a prickling, burning sensation that is usually quickly alleviated once the limb is moved and normal nerve function is restored.

Known in the medical profession as parasthesiae, when experienced after a whiplash injury this stinging sensation can be the symptom of severe nerve damage and needs to be thoroughly examined.

The cervical spine is the location for eight nerve roots which exit from the spinal column through tiny gaps between the vertebrae. If these gaps are narrowed as the result of impact experienced in a whiplash accident, the nerve roots may become damaged and irritated causing changes in sensation along the path of the nerve which could see the injury victim suffering from severe pins and needles in their hands and fingers.

An accident victim who experiences parasthesiae should consult a doctor who will determine a course of therapy or treatment that can alleviate the symptoms.
