Whiplash injury and trialling a dual approach of acupuncture and exercise

The quest for effective treatments for whiplash injury continues to vex many of the world's leading medical scientists.

It is in Australia however, that some of the most innovative developments continue to be trialled.

For example, in 2009 the University of Queensland's Centre for National Research on Disability and Rehabilitation Medicine commenced trials on a treatment that was based on a dual approach of dry acupuncture needling and exercise.

It is hoped that the treatment will alleviate the symptoms of whiplash injury by using the needles to desensitise muscle trigger points; something which will then allow for patients to undertake a programme of rehabilitative exercises.

The integrity of the study will be ensured by a control group who will receive a course of "sham" injections.

The research is being led by the physiotherapist Associate Professor Michelle Sterling. She commented, "There are not a lot of treatment options out there. "We've shown in the past that a standard physio approach is not effective for a sub-group of people with chronic whiplash."The impact of their accident has wound up the way their central nervous system processes pain, making them hypersensitive to any kind of stimuli."

Yet Sterling is optimistic about that the trial might address some of the vexing problems presented by the injury. "I'm a physiotherapist by discipline but I was always interested in the more difficult cases and working out why some people didn't recover well," she commented. "Our research has found that indicators of poor recovery include an altered central nervous system processing of pain, post traumatic stress disorder and stress."There is no one-size-fits-all approach for treating whiplash. "You need to look at the underlying pain processes and develop a tailored treatment plan, which might involve combining physio with psychology."
