Whiplash injury and PTSD comorbidity

Whiplash injury and post-traumatic stress disorder are two seemingly unrelated conditions. After all, whiplash injury is often thought of as a minor and intangible injury, while PTSD is more commonly associated with sudden personal bereavement or the horrific events of war.

Yet there is an increasing body of science to suggest that the neck injury has a much stronger link with PTSD than typically thought. For example, only recently the Department of Medical Psychology, University Hospital Groningen, Groningen, The Netherlands, conducted a study investigating the links between the two conditions.

Significant levels of comorbidity (the coexistence of both conditions) were found, particularly in chronic cases of the hyperflexion injury. This is hardly surprising to the no win, no fee lawyers accustomed to dealing with accident compensation claims for the neck condition.

Indeed, the Dutch scientists reported that 25% of all car accident injury sufferers develop PTSD and speculated that the rate may be even higher in those with the symptoms of chronic whiplash.

While the link might at first seem unlikely, closer examination reveals it to be easily explicable: the nerves that pass through the neck are heavily involved in the brain's processes and any damage suffered to them can impress lasting damage on both the subconscious and unconscious; naturally, this, coupled with the trauma of a car crash itself, has the potential to lead to lasting and severe emotional side-effects.
