Whiplash injury and the botulinum toxin Neurobloc

A whole range of drugs are administered for the treatment of whiplash injury, with varying and sometimes inconsistent results. Some patients will be prescribed simple Paracetamol, others an anti-inflammatory such as Ibuprofen or Dicloflex, while some with extreme pain and associated hypertension may even be prescribed Valium.

One drug that trials have shown to have positive results is Neurobloc, or Myobloc. One American study showed this drug, which belongs to the botulinum toxin group of medications, to be particularly effective in treating the symptoms of post whiplash injury headache.

The study found that Neurobloc offered near immediate relief of symptoms, including headaches, pain and neck mobility, for 71% of the 31 patients involved.

Typically, Neurobloc is administered as an injectable solution, which, by blocking the release of acetylcholine, creates localised paralysis at the site of the pain.

Although hyperflexion neck injury-specific studies indicate only minor side-effects, such as dryness in the mouth (exhibited in around 40% of trial patients), the US's Food and Drug Administration has expressed concern about the safety and use of botulinum toxins.

The FDA is concerned that this group of drugs, which also includes Botox, may be linked to respiratory failure and death. This concern was expressed after the organisation examined 9 years of data and found that there were nearly 700 cases of people suffering breathing-related problems, such as pneumonia or fluid on the lungs, shortly after being injected with a botulinum toxin.

Perhaps as a result of this and resultant product liability concerns, very few medical practitioners in the UK currently prescribe Neurobloc, even in cases of severe car accident neck injury.
