Treating a whiplash injury with MLD

There is an increasing consensus that the best treatment for a whiplash injury depends very much on the individual. No one rehabilitative discipline can lay claim to being the definitive one, no matter what claims have been made over the years by physiotherapists, chiropractors and acupuncturists.

One treatment that some neck injury compensation claimants have reported as being of benefit is Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD). However frightening its name might sound at first, it is actually a relatively unintrusive therapy, relying on the gentle, rhythmic pumping of the lymph glands. Since these lymph glands lie within the subcutaneous layer of the skin, the therapy can be administered quite comfortably.

It was developed in the 1930s by a French doctor called Emil Vodder who found it to be of use in treating British patients who went to French sanatoriums suffering from poor respiratory health. Since then, people with a whole variety of health complaints have found the therapy to be of benefit. Head injury, burn, scar, frozen shoulder, carpal tunnel and whiplash injury patients have all found relief in MLD.

Taking its basic principles from massage, MLD uses gentle pressure to direct the body's processes along its natural lymph flow. This can promote the removal of metabolic wastes, excess water, large protein molecules and other alien or gratuitous substances through the lymph system.

Once MLD has been administered, some patients may feel sleepy or lethargic. This is perfectly normal, and has been explained by the lymph system working to remove harmful substances. As a consequence, some people may also feel a need to urinate with increased frequency following treatment; this is because the body is simply purging itself of waste material.

Although some people may experience benefit after only a few MLD treatments, most practitioners will usually advise between 6 and 10 to reap full benefit.
