Whiplash and WAD a Canadian doctor's guide
The case of a Canadian pro-baseball player who had to give up the game after a 2006 baseball injury left him concussed and with severe whiplash, highlighted the 2009 publication of a whiplash "handbook" as written by a British Columbian back pain specialist.
Dr Mark Frobb stated that his book, "Surviving Whiplash: Saving Your Neck Without Losing Your Mind" was a layman's guide to whiplash associated disorder (WAD). He suggested it hoped to provide information on the basics of whiplash injury, available therapies and the mechanisms of insurance and compensation (in Canada).
The baseball-star Corey Koskie, who gave up professional sport three years after his whiplash injury, once told press, "If I wrote a book I'd call it, 'If Only I Had A Cast'. People think you're fine," but he later admitted that realistically he was unable to play and that he'd had to ask himself, "is it really worth sacrificing the rest of your life for a game?"
Dr Frobb said concussions, cognitive disorders, memory lapse and even post traumatic stress are all part of the spectrum of whiplash associated disorder and even a mild car accident or head trauma, such as a slip or trip, can cause major damage to soft tissues in the neck.
He suggested that this could become a major problem for the accident victim.
He said, "The onus is on whiplash victims to be able to prove that they've been significantly damaged and that it's affected their life."
Dr Frobb suggested that his book was intended as a non-academic, easy-to-read guide for those who might be suffering the painful and debilitating effects of whiplash and weren't sure where to turn next.
Some of Frobb's key issues regarding WAD are:
- Seek treatment within the first three months after the accident;
- Sleeplessness due to head and neck pain are a major symptom that a neck injury victim needs treatment for whiplash;
- Document the injuries and details of the accident, such as vehicle speeds, road conditions etc; and,
- For those seeking treatment the knowledge that therapies often have a maximum effect is important. Hence carrying on with excessive treatments once a certain level of stability has been achieved may well be useless and similarly if the patient finds no improvement after several sessions of treatment it is unlikely that that particular therapy is going to be of any real long term benefit.
