As well as their deserved whiplash compensation payment, legitimate sufferers from the neck injury responsible are generally very keen to know that people are striving to help them recover from their condition. It is, therefore, pleasing to see that research continues into the injury.
One such is the 2009 review of evidence (published in the scientific periodical Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy) that investigates the potential for a hyperflexion injury to turn into a long-term disorder. Rather than set up a new study, this examines the results of research already done for underlying trends that the original researchers were not looking for.
And it found them. Signposts for WAD (whiplash-associated disorder, or long-term symptoms related to the condition) that appeared to be statistically significant included previous neck pain, previous headaches, pre-existing whiplash and being female. Strangely enough, having been involved in further or higher education appeared to make it less likely that a car accident victim would suffer WAD.
As a piece of secondary research, the study had to check its results against publication bias (the fact that the results that get published tend to show only a part of the truth, and a certain degree of mistrust should therefore be applied to a gathering of such data). Even allowing for this extra degree of caution, the figures still suggested that research into the remaining risk factors may be worth following up. These were severity of whiplash injury, existence of headache, intensity of neck pain and, again, absence of education past secondary school.
The concluding suggestion of the report is that such information could be used to help doctors make more accurate prognoses when faced with sufferers from this form of neck injury.
