Whiplash claims and positive outlook research
People engaged in making a whiplash claim, or considering one, may be interested to learn that the University of Alberta has published research suggesting that a positive outlook on life may be related to better recovery from the neck injury.
Along with a Swedish colleague, the Canadian university's scientists looked at a corpus of more than 6,000 people who had suffered a whiplash injury after a car accident, and measured the sufferers' positivity regarding their ability to return to work.
The personal injury victims who felt more positive about their recovery prospects were shown to be right, with the healing process being three times faster, according to a 2009 report. Recovery times did not, however, show a strong correlation with the severity of the neck injury.
The Swedish researcher's section of the study showed that people with negative feelings toward their neck injury were likely to have lingering symptoms for significantly longer periods.
The conclusion that should be drawn from this is that fast recovery times and positive outlooks are related; it does not necessarily follow that a hyperflexion injury will be positively affected by the person who suffered "cheering up a bit". It is possible, for example, that the propensity to heal quickly may be a factor in developing a positive outlook - although this, as a conclusion, is no more supported by the evidence than the first is.
However, it is an interesting avenue for research and could lead to treatments based on positivity if the first conclusion can be shown to be solid.
