An MRI scan's relevance to a whiplash claim

One perceived problem with whiplash claims is the intangible nature of the injury. This, however, does not mean that it is impossible for claimants to provide evidence of a link between their neck injury symptoms and the car crash which apparently caused them.

MRI Scans of the headDespite this, both no-win no-fee solicitors and medical professionals continue to hope for advances in the field of hyperflexion neck injury science; quite simply, any new technological advancement to aid accurate diagnosis of the injury should both expedite whiplash claims and help provide for improved diagnostic outcomes.

One important study into measuring and visualising this type of acceleration-deceleration injury involved the use of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanners.

A cohort of 408 participated in the study. Interestingly, the Danish researchers did find that there was some visual evidence of traumatic tissue damage in both those patients with the severest injuries, typically chronic WAD (Whiplash Associated Disorder), and those suffering from persistent headaches.

MRI ScannerUnfortunately, however, this visible damage was rare and only limited relevance to symptomatology and prognosis and the researchers went so far as to reason that the MRI technique was of little use except in cases where "herniated disc is clinically suspected".

Despite the limited usefulness of the study's findings, the researchers didn't count out the possibility that MRI scanning might play a part in ascertaining the authenticity of whiplash claims in the future, concluding," MRI is not the answer to a diagnosis in the vast majority of patients developing long-lasting pain after a whiplash injury, and early MRI scans do not predict prognosis. It may be relevant to focus future trials upon imaging of the upper cervical spine including functional imaging."
