Much research has been done to try and optimise the safety of car seat head restraints. Although many may believe they have more to do with comfort, head restraints are vital in the prevention of soft tissue damage and resulting neck injuries such as whiplash. New technology and seat designs could help prevent such injuries and the need for making a whiplash claim.
The design of head restraints is vital in the prevention of whiplash injuries. While the simple adjustment of your head restraint alone can help prevent the soft tissue damage that whiplash causes, the design of the head restraint itself is more important.
More and more car manufacturers are developing their car seat designs to try to optimise the protection the head rests can provide. In 2009, mechanical engineers at the Technical University of Milan worked with Italian headrest manufacturer Gestind MB S.P.A in Bruzolo to develop a new design to minimise the impact of a collision on the head and neck area in a rear vehicle impact.
Aimed at combating the rise in whiplash figures which the growth in the traffic density and subsequent car accidents are causing, the research looked at several factors which influence the effectiveness of the head restraint.
Gobbi, a mechanical engineer involved with the research at the University of Milan had this to say about the need for better head restraint solutions:
"Without significant efforts in crash prevention and improvements in vehicle safety design, especially with more effective back and head restraint systems, the ever increasing traffic density will show a rise in this negative trend."
The research identified that part of the problem that is causing such high numbers of whiplash injuries is that drivers and their passengers are unaware of the need to adjust their head rests to suit their height. If they are not adjusted correctly, they can be rendered virtually useless as a protective aid and are unlikely to offer much comfort.
One of the main problems with some current head restraints is the difficulty passengers and drivers have trying to adjust them. This can prevent passengers and drivers from changing the height of the restraint to the correct height and therefore gaining the head and neck protection needed to help prevent injury.
