As a tool to prevent whiplash injuries and the subsequent whiplash claims that follow, the continued improvement of car safety is paramount.
In February 2009 a new protocol for testing cars was introduced by the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) entitled "The Dynamic Assessment of Car Seats for Neck injury Protection Testing Protocol – Version 2.9".
The code was set out to enable testers to dynamically test car seat and head restraint assemblies to assess their reflection of best practice guidelines in the prevention of soft tissue neck injuries. The testing procedure related to forward facing front seats only.
Crash test data suggests that the majority of whiplash injuries result from rear-impact collisions at 10mph. However, statistics also show that impacts at higher and lower speeds also result in whiplash claims.
The EuroNCAP whiplash prevention test therefore consists of three sled tests to simulate a variety of rear crash scenarios at differing speeds and acceleration levels.
This new test protocol promotes the best practice in seat design with particular focus on good head restraint geometry, ease of use and adjustment, head restraint locking and overall seat integrity.
The whiplash scores applied to new cars that have undergone testing reflect both the geometrical aspects of the seat, the size and shape of the head restraint and its proximity to the driver/ passenger, along with the dynamic performance of the seat and head restraint during the crash test.
As of January 2009, whiplash scores have been included in the Adult Protection scores in all new cars.
