People claim for all sorts of things and in the spring of 2009 UK politicians were lambasted in the national press and media for expenses claims pertaining to second homes close to Westminster. Although not directly a whiplash claim, one politician did make a whiplash-related claim which involved the sum of £1,354.80 for the purchase of two ergonomic "posture" chairs.
The Daily Telegraph reported that the MP claimed the chairs were bought for a member of staff who had suffered whiplash in a car accident and whilst correct posture after a soft tissue injury of the neck is important, there are more cost-effective ways of achieving it than spending a large amount of money.
Correct posture for whiplash patients
PhysioAdvisor.com suggests that optimal sitting posture can be achieved by sitting tall on an appropriate chair with back support. The patient's bottom should be in the back of the chair with lumber support in the small of the back (this could be a small pillow or rolled up towel). Shoulders should be kept back and the chin should be tucked in slightly.
Whiplash sufferers should perform early movement and postural exercises to prevent the neck and back from stiffening and to maintain full muscle function. A GP or physiotherapist will be able to advise on appropriate exercises and the frequency with which they should be carried out.
Patients with whiplash should be warned that poor posture places considerable stress on the neck and spine and will aggravate and prolong the symptoms.
