In effect, the eyes are compensating for deficiencies in neck mobility (most likely caused by injury to the cervical trapezoid muscles) by an increase in reflexive activity, enabling the patient to perceive visual stimuli on a level comparable to his or her pre-car accident state.

It is worth noting that increases in the cervico-ocular reflex are rarely noted in patients who experience heightened levels of whiplash-related dizziness.
