People considering a whiplash claim may be interested in a 2009 study from an Australian university that showed differences in opinions between patients and their doctors.
The study, under the title "'I've broken my neck or something!' The general practice experience of whiplash", was published in Family Practice, a journal published by Oxford University Press, in January 2009.
The researchers interviewed nine patients suffering from a mild to moderate whiplash neck injury, and their doctors, then followed up the initial in-depth interview with a telephone interview 3 months later to check on progress. Among the results of the study were the need for trust and understanding between patient and doctor and a principal concern being the levels of pain and potential financial harm suffered by the accident injury victim.
Differences revealed by the study, however, included an awareness on the doctors' behalf that speedy recovery may not be as possible as patients hope. A scepticism was expressed by some of the medical professionals about some referrals they are encouraged to make by their patients, such as short-term physiotherapy, and a noted dislike of patients pursuing inflated compensation claims. However, the doctors were also shown to have underestimated patient distress in the period after the patient received the neck injury.
The researchers concluded that the patient-doctor relationship is highly important to whiplash recovery, and that the elements of disconnect between them shown in this study challenge patient-centred care.
