In terms of a whiplash claim, unexpected and extreme changes in meteorological activity are unlikely to be a viable causal factor in personal injury compensation, but one US environmental journalist is trying to coin the phrase "weather whiplash" as another idiom for the climatic lexicon.
His proposed definition is as follows: "Weather whiplash (noun) - an ailment that strikes during/after an unusually rapid transition from one season to the next […] Cases of weather whiplash usually involve skipping an in-between season, like spring or fall, and transitioning immediately to either summer or winter."
He suggests that the main symptoms of weather whiplash are, "a general sense of unease, and an overpowering urge to talk about the weather with total strangers". However, the phenomenon can have more serious consequences such as arriving for work in flip flops only to be later confronted with a journey home in three inches of snow.
Now, a fall in snow whilst wearing flip flops is probably not grounds for a whiplash claim, but slipping on a shop step that has been badly cleared and made more hazardous by the effort, could well be (particularly if the injured party was wearing suitable footwear for the prevailing conditions).
Whiplash injury typically causes neck pain, back pain and or various other symptoms that may require treatment and time off work.
