Whiplash, vertigo, and no win no fee compensation claims.
One symptom that sufferers of whiplash may experience is vertigo. It is not always possible to state for certain whether the vertigo is caused by the whiplash neck injury or whether both are independent symptoms of a common cause, often a car crash.
Cervical vertigo - that caused by damage to the spine and neck - is only one of various forms of post-traumatic vertigo. Two main theories exist as to the mechanism through which a neck injury can affect a person's sense of balance; one is that blood flow through the neck is affected, so that not enough reaches the organs of balance in the inner ear, while a second suggests that the nerves in the neck are affected instead.
A Japanese study from 2006 examined the blood flow theory, and its results suggested that sufferers of whiplash-related vertigo did have significantly different bloodflow rates through a major neck artery; however, it also found that the control group were, to a lesser degree, also affected by this difference. The research paper interpreted this to mean that the bloodflow irregularity could lead to vertigo, but could not claim to prove that a whiplash accident had caused the irregularity.
The classic experiment that indicated the second theory took place in 1977, when the researchers injected local anaesthetics into their own necks to replicate the effects of proprioceptors - the nerves in a body part that tell the brain where that part is - giving misleading information.
In each case, there may also be further mechanisms at work. Hyperflexion neck injuries remain a complex field for both medicine and personal injury law.
